‘The Walking Dead’ season 7, episode 9 reaction: Is Father Gabriel a thief at all?

Tonight, “The Walking Dead” aired an episode that raised a couple of different questions, but one of the biggest ones revolved around whether or not Father Gabriel could really be guilty of something likely stealing some of the group’s supplies and hauling it out of Alexandria. We’ve come to know him as more than just a cowardly person since we’ve met him; he’s toughened up at times, and even served as the voice of reason at others!

So where could we be seeing the show go from here with Rick smiling, and getting set to collide into a whole new group of people? This is something that executive producer Scott M. Gimple talked about further in a postmortem for the episode with TVLine:

“It seems that they’re following this trail that Gabriel kind of put them on, and suddenly, they meet up with all these people… Could they have Gabriel? Could they just know something about it? Rick’s found this note in [the supply log] that seems like it was a message from Gabriel, because Rick knows this guy. He knows he wouldn’t [steal Alexandria’s food and leave]. Now, Rosita doesn’t agree with him. But maybe this means Gabriel didn’t do that. Maybe Rick was right.”

We want to believe Rick too, just because it’s far more interesting that seeing Ezekiel seemingly want to sneak his way out of Dodge with all of the value stuff that the group needs. That suggestion is simply far less interesting, and it doesn’t give the show the same flair or level of excitement.

That we’ve gotten through the premiere, the biggest thing that we hope for is that one way or another, the show figures out a way to raise the stakes and give us an episode next week that is a little bit more intense! While this one had its moments, we expected things to be even crazier given all the hype.
