‘Victoria’ episode 5 preview (PBS): Albert searches for a place
On Sunday night’s new episode of “Victoria,” you’re going to see a story all about a struggle that is still one that is very much going on today in various capacities: A search for identity, and finding the proper place for one to call home. We’re not just talking physically here, either.
For Albert, he’s hoping to figure out the right way to make a name for himself in the kingdom, and in all of Great Britain; unfortunately for him, he is finding it rather difficult. He’s coming into the world with an outsider status, and while Victoria may hold love for him, that does not necessarily hold true for the remainder of the country — or even others with royal blood. This is something that the Queen herself finds frustrating, as she vents about the Duke of Sussex.
Hopefully, this episode does prove to be rather entertaining for those of you who do appreciate opportunities to see characters involved in interesting personal dilemmas to go along with ones that are more political. What makes this show so interesting is that they tend to view things from a pretty panoramic lens. You see Victoria and Albert as much of Britain may have perceived them at the time, while at the same time understanding their own personal journeys and what they mean to each other. Both are significant in their own way, and with that in mind, neither perspective is diminished in any capacity.
Suffice it to say that Albert will eventually figure things out a little bit further over time. Much of this season is going to be about this process, and how he starts to understand what his responsibilities are — in addition to the sort of person he wants to be in this new place. If you love historical drama, then we continue to have a feeling that “Victoria” is going to be a series that is right up your alley.
