Alec Baldwin talks Sean Spicer’s reaction to Donald Trump impression

SNL -

Alec Baldwin’s made plenty of headlines for his Donald Trump impression on “Saturday Night Live,” but it’s clear that there are two different reactions to it: You love it and think it’s one of the most hilarious things that the NBC sketch show has done in a rather long time, or you hate it and think that it is unnecessarily cruel. There’s really not too much in the way of middle ground here.

One of the things that Baldwin has done in the midst of talking about this impression is keep some perspective, and not go too crazy over what any of the negative reactions are to the impression. While he certainly has fought back against Trump on many things, most of them are policy-related as opposed to things that have to do with his impression. He’s been more even-keeled there, and the same goes to the reaction that Sean Spicer had to it. Speaking in a recent interview, the Press Secretary made it clear that he felt that the impression was a little too “mean” more so than funny.

Baldwin’s response, as he told his wife Hilaria in a new interview on “Extra,” was that everything Spicer said made sense given his own personal point of view:

“What is he supposed to say? All those guys are working for Trump; they work for the president, and they are going to say what they need to say to fit in… That’s symbolic of where we’re at — we repeat back everything that Trump says.”

Baldwin also said that playing Trump (which he is going to do most likely this weekend, given that he is the host for the occasion) is actually not all that fun, mostly because he is so negative; also, he made it clear that so much of the impression is just a reflection of things that the President actually says. It’s a little bit different than some other “SNL” impressions we’ve seen over time.
