84 Lumber responds to controversial Super Bowl commercial

84 Lumber -

The moment that 84 Lumber decided to create a Super Bowl commercial that was all about a woman and her child trying to enter the United States from Mexico, it was fairly easy to figure out what the reaction to it was going to be … and that there was going to be some backlash to it. This is, after all, a world where even the slightest controversy is going to set people off on social media, and we’d say that this ad in particular worked to stoke the fire. There was a powerful, human message to what was presented, but it also was the most literal representation of events happening right now in the country, so much more so than the ad created by Budweiser telling the story of their company.

Now, the company’s President has issued a response.

If you look below, you can see what Maggie Hardy Magerko of the company had to say in response to the ad, and the message that the company attempted to get across with it. They make it fairly clear that the ending of their ad specifically was meant to be a metaphor that there should always be a door for legal immigration, and that we as Americans should welcome those who are willing to fight and work hard in their attempts to be American.

We’re not going to tell anyone what to believe, whether it be as a response to this ad or in any way in general. Yet, at the same time we do think the world would be a lot better if we were all a little less cynical, and we spent more time trying to come up with real solutions to problems as opposed to complaining about things in a YouTube comment thread. (In general, we consider those to be a black whole of the internet.)

If you haven’t had a chance to see the commercial just yet (just in case you were among the select few who didn’t watch the game), you can check that now out below. We’ll be back with some other updates in the event there is some further news to report. (Photo: 84 Lumber.)
