Mr. Clean’s 2017 Super Bowl commercial my freak you out (video)
We all know Mr. Clean to be a pretty friendly dude with an earring who wants to make your place as spiffy as humanly possible. What we don’t know him as is the subject of some sort of odd fetish where someone fantasizes about him.
Yet, that is precisely what the cleaning product is giving you with its Super Bowl commercial today. It’s certainly strange, but that’s precisely the point and it certainly looks like this is exactly what Mr. Clean is going for. Look below for our full take on what has to be one of the stranger ads that we’ve seen so far today.
What worked – Just from the vantage point of getting your attention, this absolutely delivers. Despite the odd premise, there’s a pretty fun ending here with branding that seems to be catered more towards men towards women — if you do a good job cleaning your place, then your significant other will fantasize over you by pretending that you are a CGI cleaning-company mascot … or something like that.
The best thing about the commercial may just be that it’s short, it gets to the point, and then it moves on to the next thing.
What didn’t – Did Mr. Clean really need to be CGI? It’s the most distracting thing about the ad. There’s really no reason whatsoever for the company to not just hire someone to dance around in the outfit who bore a striking resemblance to the mascot. It actually would’ve made a little bit more sense, given that this is not actually the way that we pictured the real Mr. Clean moving around or acting this way.
Overall – Despite a clear flaw with the CGI Clean, this odd is strange and funny enough to make up for its shortcomings. We at the very least love that Mr. Clean had the guts to do something that is a little out of their comfort zone, and try a commercial that emphasizes humor and ropes in a new audience. Grade: B.
