Super Bowl commercials: KFC uses Rob Riggle, Billy Zane to promote Georgia Gold chicken
KFC is a rather odd duck when you look at everything that they do from an advertising point of view. After all, it seems like they have a new Colonel Sanders every couple of months, and also some other random product that they are promoting. We saw Nashville Hot Chicken at one point, and we’re moving now into Georgia Gold Chicken territory.
As odd as the ad below may be, at the same time we’re willing to give them at least a small degree of credit, mostly because we do think that they’ve made the most of the 15 seconds that they have in the ad previewed before Super Bowl LI later today.
What worked – Casting Billy Zane as the “Golden” Colonel somehow works, and the whole idea of this Colonel being made of solid gold also gives you a nice moment of physical comedy. Despite the fact that this is a super-short ad, KFC does make sure to fit in what makes Georgia Gold different than any of the fried chicken products that are out there. They make the most of their time.
What didn’t – The big issue with KFC’s recent Colonel-heavy advertisements mostly is just how many of them are just purely stupid. There’s not a lot of substance to any of them, and there are a fairly significant amount of people who just find these ads to be annoying. This commercial is not going to do anything to change their mind, even if you do have Zane joining the excellent Rob Riggle, who’s been the Colonel for most of the past few months.
Overall – This commercial’s not going to light the internet on fire, or change the way that any of us view Super Bowl ads in the near future. Yet, it’s still reasonably funny, and the best thing about it is that it doesn’t overstay its welcome. It gets in, makes you laugh, and then goes away before you start to think that the premise is tired. We don’t know what else you would want from it. Grade: B.
