Intel – Super Bowl 2017 commercial uses Tom Brady to promote 360 technology
It’s interesting that given the number of commercials in which we’ve seen Peyton Manning in over the years, the number for Tom Brady seems to pale in comparison. Yet, it’s really nice to see him pop up in more of these, at least given that he has some personality in them. We may not love Brady or the Patriots all that much, but we’ll give him some credit for his commercial cred.
Tonight, Intel has hired Brady to do a spot highlighting their 360 technology, which allows you to reinvent the way that you watch and replay things. It’s a cool technology, and Tom’s morning routine — including apparently eating a pancake off of the floor — emphasizes that greatly. (We didn’t think Tom ate pancakes…)
What worked – Really high-energy, and much of that starts with Brady’s willingness to go big in this ad rather than play things safe. He really puts a lot of work into his facial expressions, and the music is dramatic in the way that you want. Really nice tag at the end, and the commercial’s about as clear as you’re going to get given the technology advertised.
What didn’t – Could Intel have explained this product even more to people who aren’t altogether familiar with tech? Probably, but at the same time they’re well aware of the fact that newbies aren’t really their demographic. This is geared more towards the people who are already tech junkies and would lap this sort of thing up.
Overall – The real star of the commercial is the dog, mostly because someone actually managed to get an animal to do everything that they wanted them to. That is no easy feat, so you do have to give the show a lot of credit for that. Brady is utilized well, and Intel seems to have a good grasp on their consumer base. This isn’t a legendary ad by any means, but it knows what it is and it does a good job selling itself all the while. Grade: B+.
