Wix.com – Super Bowl commercial uses Gal Gadot, Jason Statham for … something
We get it: It’s the Super Bowl, and you love to blow stuff up because someone’s given you a ton of money to come up with a cool idea. You still want to believe that you could do better than what Wix.com came up with for the big game this year. You’ve got two huge stars in Gal Gadot and Jason Statham, and you use them for … well, exactly what you would expect. They kick butt and take names at a restaurant, while at the same time you’ve got the chef working on a website behind the scenes completely ignorant as to what is going on around him.
Sure, this ad will get some attention, but it may not be for the company itself at all.
What worked – Having big-name stars does help you, so with that it wouldn’t be right for us to say that Wix messed up in hiring either the “Wonder Woman” star or Statham for the ad. Also, we’re not going to deny that the fight scenes are anything short of great. In terms of executing the original pitch, the company comes through with that in flying colors.
What didn’t – The pitch itself was kind of weird. Wix argues in this commercial that their website builder is so immersive, you will be able to dive in without any distractions. Yet, is it really a good thing that you’re getting distracted from people destroying your restaurant? Is a food truck really that much safer? The idea doesn’t make all that much sense, and it doesn’t do a great job of actually showing off what the service provides. The one for Kung Fu Panda previously was so much better.
Overall – In terms of star power, great. Unfortunately, that and the choreography are the only things that Wix really has going for them this time around. We’ll take this ad over a generic car commercial, but that’s the only reason it gets a passing grade. Grade: C.
