TV Revivals: Should ‘Rizzoli & Isles’ return with a season 8 down the road?
There are many shows from 2016 that we’re already starting to miss, but one of the best ones was “Rizzoli & Isles” over on TNT. We’ve stated many times over at this point that this is the sort of show that we love — one that mixes some intense mysteries and crime-fighting with fun characters, humor, and relationships we come to care about deeply. It’s a genre that never goes out of style.
Also, this is a show that never lost the message of friendship that was at the heart of the story. No matter what happened to Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles over the course of the journey, the series was always about their relationship, and how they managed to grow so close over this chapter of their lives.
If you recall, the series finale this past summer ended with the two characters starting to go their separate ways. However, Jane did ultimately decide prior to going to Quantico for her new job that she’d spend a few weeks with Maura in Paris. This opened the door to a wide array of possibilities for the series’ future … and it is also the focus in today’s chapter of our month-long TV Revivals series.
How to bring it back – Showrunner Jan Nash perfectly set up what a season 8 would be: The story of Rizzoli and Isles in Paris, experiencing this new place and building memories. Eventually, you figure that they would probably end up discovering a dead body or two somewhere, and maybe they end up as a result meeting some French authorities. They can work remotely with their old friends in Boston, solve a case or two, and awkwardly and hilariously explore some French traditions. Even if Jane does end up departing for Quantico at the end of the revival, at least you’re giving the duo one last hurrah in the field. Who knows? Maybe after starting her new job Rizzoli will realize that she misses her old gig and she’ll find a way to collaborate with Maura once more.
As for how to work this out structurally, you wouldn’t need too many episodes to tell this story — that way, Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander could still have the freedom to do other things. Think along the lines of a six-episode season that airs over one summer. You could probably also make it work in a two-hour movie, though personally we’d like to see it last a tad longer than that. This is a format that we love, and we’d love to see more and more other shows from the past explore it. If you want to keep a revival going, all you have to do is reunite every couple of years, tell new stories, and then have another break.
Could it actually happen? – Never say never, right? We know that there’s at least some interest on a production side in doing more “Rizzoli & Isles” episodes, and given that this was one of TNT’s most-popular shows during its run, it’s easy to imagine that network executives would be open to the possibility.
With that said, it’s hard to see it happening anytime soon. The show only ended last year, and that’s not much of a break for anyone. Maybe this is something that could be explored in 2018 or 2019; we’ll keep our fingers crossed, but as a reminder everything we’ve said here is mere speculation. We just feel like the interest would be there, and in a difficult, depressing time for many people, this show is a great source of community and joy. TV has a wonderful way of binding us together.

Yes please! More exploration of their friendship/relationship. It can definitely be more of a movie including Paris and solving a case together with everyone back home. Then have Jane figure out if the FBI is really what she wants. Maybe she comes back to BPD as a Sargent and see where Jane and Maura’s friendship/relationship goes. Take the show back to two strong female leads! Find new writers and maybe have the girls be co-directors.

i agree somewat with the comments here i would love to see a series 8 or a movie in the future i think the show went south when lee died it was hard for all concerned i liked 1-4 with hoyt but when jt was sacked it went to hell in a basket it felt like a jane rizzoli show bringing in jn wasnt a good idea tbh imo i prefer jt it had the right blend it needs balance good writers male and female it needs more maura time maybe if they did the paris trip and maura book that would be good intertwined with a french murder that somehow is related to bpd maybe bring in new characters along with the old ones i wouldnt want the show to be just jane and maura thats just boring and i think they need a name change so that viewers understand the show

Only if a new season (or a movie) could push a little further the exploration of friendship between the two protagonists.

Instead of a season 8 I would personally like to see a R&I movie or two. Making a couple of movies would also allow Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander plenty of time to persue other projects. I wouldnt want Jan Nash involved though because I think she singlehandedly ruined what was once a great show.

Bravo Cartermatt! You have no idea how much this show is missed and how much we need a season 8, 9 and 10 with more Jane & Maura no Jan Nash. She started off strong in season 5 but fizzled out in season 7. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/d3b5be9eb49acde3fc91ec0d466ae9f32ee168b0b71f94143babc924d6332c3c.jpg

Although I would love to see Angie Harmon in something else, a few episodes as a revival would be great. Change the writers and the tone of the show and make it darker. And yes, keep Jan Nash away from the revival but also keep away Janet Tamaro. Tamaro wasn’t so great, either.

It would be a great idea but without Nash and her writers. All she gave us in the last two years was Rizzoli and Korsak and a bunch of side stories about the B players. We barely saw the friendship between the two leads in the last two years. Jane on screen all the time with her male detective partner solving crimes and bonding while Maura is only seen randomly for a less than 8 minutes per episode did not make R&I about two female friends solving crimes. It got pretty sexist in the last two years as the writers had Jane jump into bed with her new boss, Maura got assaulted in front of the elevator when Kent planted an uninvited kiss on her, Jane was stalked by a fisherman, TNT got rid of Susie and cut Jane and Maura’s interactions to keep females from being on screen together too much so we got portly Bruce on screen all the time with Angie. One FB fan counted 15 scenes for Bruce, 23 for Angie and 8 for Sasha in the “Murderjuana ” episode in season 6 as an example. Bring it back but have Jane and Maura solving crimes together and have Korsak back as a supporting player, not a replacement for Maura/Sasha’s screen time. Get Janet Tamaro back.

No, thanks. The predominantly male writers/producers of the late seasons of the show turned the formerly strong female leads into caricatures and robbed them of their strengths. If I want to see women getting abused by older white men, I’ll just turn on the news. Plus, I’d like to see Sasha Alexander in a show and/or movie that gives her something to act and doesn’t waste her for comic relief. Keep this show off the air.

Jane and Maura maybe getting involved in a death in Paris and assisting their French colleagues with the help of BPD is a bit far fetched but with artistic licence it could work but only for 2 or 3 episodes surely.
In the UK the BBC’s Silent Witness pops up every now again with two 90 minute episodes to investigate a murder or whatever…that format could work..but you tend not to do that in the States.
And as Carol points out, it would HAVE to be a Nashless enterprise, she all but ruined the show!

I’d only vote ‘Yes” if R&I had a new showrunner. Jan Nash turned R&I into a sitcom/soap. Go back to the show we loved from the pilot!
