‘Call the Midwife’ season 6, episode 3 preview: Sister Ursula’s bike ride and more

Ursula -While Sister Ursula on “Call the Midwife” may a be of a dictator within Nonnatus House, we’ve learned that outside the hospital, the character clearly has a few weaknesses.

Specifically, we’re talking here about her struggles when it comes to hopping aboard a bicycle. The sneak peek below is from Sunday’s new episode, and there is very clearly some comedy to be had here when it comes to it. We’re going to see the character do everything in her power to successfully hop aboard the bike, but let’s just say that this does not go well … at all. She struggles in a major way with it, but she keeps pushing forward!

Maybe this is a fun sneak peek designed to make the character appear slightly more endearing; if she is to stick around, we presume that sooner or later, we’ve got to start seeing some different sides of her. Maybe this is the beginning of that opportunity. Or, maybe this preview is meant more to raise questions about Sister Monica Joan, who is disappearing for long periods of time.

The case against Ursula turning more likable is that within this episode, you’re also going to see her at the center of arguments regarding her attempts to get the midwives to develop less of a personal relationship with the patients they look after. This includes the new parents below, who face a little bit of tension with baby’s grandmother over naming the child after a dead relative. Apparently, in her eyes that is a sign of bad luck. (Aren’t there many people out there who do want to go for something like this? We like to think so.) This is an episode that will probably look at cultural differences, but then also whether or not Ursula is equipped to handle both those and the Nonnatus way of doing things, especially while the midwives still continue to feel the specter of major hospitals looming. One of the big questions at the heart of this hour is whether or not we could see smaller hospitals give way for larger community ones, which would cover childbirth and so much more.
