Mobile Strike 2017 Super Bowl Commercial, a.k.a. where Arnold Schwarzenegger builds a wall

ArnoldClearly, someone at Mobile Strike knew very well what they were getting themselves into when they hired Arnold Schwarzenegger yet again for their Super Bowl commercial this year, and then had him build a wall with the press of a button. There are probably some Donald Trump hate-tweets in his future!

We’ll be honest in saying that we’ve never loved these ads all that much, because all they typically amount to is an unrealistic representation of a mobile game featuring a guy doing the same thing that we’ve known him for doing the majority of his career. Over time, there was nothing that original about them. Yet, the presence of just one not-so-subtle bit of shade-throwing makes this the best ad that they’ve done by far with it being incredibly relevant.

What worked – It’s all about that moment! It’s ironic that the pre-show video for this ad is a good minute long, but really all the game needed was that one moment of the former Governor building the wall for them to have their money’s worth. It’s funny, but it does so without actually going hard for the laugh. It’s both intentional and unintentional at the same time.

What didn’t – Unless we were to watch this five more times, we’d have a really difficult time telling you anything else of substance that happens in this ad. The majority of it just seems like window dressing for what is clearly going to be the main event. Also, we’ve got the same criticism still about this being a bad representation of what the game actually is, though we understand that this looks about a million times more cool and this is the Super Bowl that we’re talking about here.

Overall – This was very fun, just for that one moment. Our only hope is that most of the semi-drunk people out there watching the game actually pay attention, given that if you’re only casually watching or listening from the other room, you’ll completely miss it and the ad will be a waste. Grade: B.
