‘Call the Midwife’ season 6: Emerald Fennell posts thank-you to fans following Patsy shocker
The sixth season of “Call the Midwife” certainly gave us two emotional stories over the course of its first two episodes, but we’re not sure that any produced as emotional of an outcry as the one revolving around Emerald Fennell’s character of Patsy. Losing this character at the end of Sunday night’s new episode proved to be an extremely difficult thing to bear, largely because this was a character who brought so much to the series in terms of passion and joy.
Unfortunately, Fennell’s future moving forward on the series remains unclear still, though she did post the picture on Twitter below thanking fans for all of their love and support following the episode airing. If there is one thing that we’d tell many of these said people concerned for her future right now, it is that the situation we’re faced with regarding Patsy is very different than the one facing Jennifer Worth (Jessica Raine), who departed the BBC series years ago. There was no reason for Jenny to return to the story; there is a clear reason for Patsy to.
As noted in the episode, Patsy is departing in order to care for her father in Hong Kong, which is a reason to what to depart the show for a good while — caring for him is essential to her emotional well-being, but it’s not necessarily a permanent job. One way or another, a time will come where she can come back both to the job that she loves, and also the woman she loves in Delia. Not having her do that would seem out of character, given just how devoted she is to Delia and also how much she loves working at Nonnatus House.
Our first look at life without Patsy on “Call the Midwife” will air Sunday. Given that she just departed, it’d be surprising if we were to see her again so soon. It’d be as though she never left!
