Miss Universe 2016: Was Raquel Pélissier (Haiti), Iris Mittenaere (France), or Andrea Tovar (Colombia) the winner?
Tonight, the Miss Universe Pageant aired on Fox, and we know that there were certainly some people who came into the episode expecting a certain degree of controversy. In the end, though, we’re not entirely sure that they’ll be talking about this Pageant anywhere near as long as they were following the last one.
We suppose that the first surprise of the night was seeing the three countries making the most headlines leading into the show — the United States, Canada, and the Philippines, who had the reigning Miss Universe — all eliminated before we got to the top three. The final candidates were a little unexpected: Raquel Pélissier (Haiti), Iris Mittenaere (France), and Andrea Tovar (Colombia). We suppose that the latter is one that almost everyone saw coming, given that Colombia, just like the Philippines, takes this Pageant very seriously and are proud of performing so well year in and year out.
As for Miss Haiti, it was easy to root for Raquel given the sole fact that she was the ultimate underdog entering the show.
Now, let’s get to the part of this that we’re sure many people out there are excited to see — the results of the final 3! Miss Colombia ended up as the second runner-up, while Miss Haiti was the first runner-up.
Your new Miss Universe is Miss France, Iris Mittenaere! Congratulations go to her and to the country, which will have a chance to celebrate this honor for the next year. While we did find ourselves rooting for Miss Haiti for much of the night because of the country’s story, we know that at the same time, she is going to have many opportunities to tell her country’s story in the weeks and months to come. Just making it as far as she did was inspirational, and we don’t mean that in a cynical, cheap way whatsoever.
