SAG Awards 2017: Kerry Washington, Ashton Kutcher, Julia Louis-Dreyfus talk Donald Trump, activism

Tonight, the Screen Actors Guild Awards were held on TNT and TBS, and while with many shows out there you get a chance to see some sort of opening via a host or a comedian, this show doesn’t quite work like that. There is no host, and as a result of that, we get a rotating panel of people over the course of the night.

Given the current state of events in the country, it absolutely made some sense that there would be something said about the state of things, whether it be actors being activists or the recent executive order that was signed by President Donald Trump. We started things off with Kerry Washington talking about the need for activism, while Ashton Kutcher opened the show officially by welcoming everyone who was off sitting at an airport somewhere wondering whether or not they were going to be able to enter the country.

We do anticipate that we are going to get an opportunity to see more actors speak out than usual tonight, mostly because of the fact that there are more issues going on than usual. Take, for example, when Julia Louis-Dreyfus won the first Actor of the night for her performance in “Veep.” She recounted a story about her father being an immigrant, and declared the recent immigration ban by Donald Trump as anti-American.

Of course, we imagine that many comments are going to be polarizing, but at the same time, what you rather see: These actors trying to use this platform in order to do good, or going up there and giving some of the same speeches that we’ve heard time and time again? We appreciate actors speaking their mind, no matter what they think — it is a reminder of their humanity, and that they care about the country just as much as everyone else does.
