‘Call the Midwife’ season 6: Should Emerald Fennell return?

Patsy -

Sunday night’s new episode of “Call the Midwife” was one where there was heartache, but also at the same time one that there was hope. It’s a bittersweet show, and therefore not every ending is precisely one that you would want.

There was a perfect example of that on Sunday night, as Emerald Fennell’s character of Patsy chose to leave Nonnatus House for a time in order to take care of her father all the way in Hong Kong. She was doing the right thing for the sake of offering up peace for her father. However, at the same exact time doing this means that she is not going to be around many of our favorite characters in the near future.

Is that something that is going to change in the weeks and months ahead? We would certainly hope so. Given that Fennell still seems to be actively supporting the show on social media, we have a hard time thinking that her departure is a permanent one. Also, you do have to remember that eventually, she could have an opportunity to return to Poplar. Either her father could recover by some miracle, or tragic could strike and eventually she could come home to heal.

The important thing here is that despite her departure, it does appear as though the relationship between Patsy and Delia is still going to go strong. They planned to write letters to one another throughout their time apart. This relationship is one that means so much to many people, especially since there are so few LGBTQ couples on British television, especially within the realm of period dramas.

In the end, this is a subject to look at once more by the end of the season; we just know that if she was to leave, it’d be a difficult loss to bear given the departures of such people as Jessica Raine and Miranda Hart already. (Hart was originally going to return this season, but unfortunately her schedule changed at the last minute.)
