‘Criminal Minds’ season 12, episode 11: First video of Jane Lynch’s return

Jane -

After a little break, there is a new episode of “Criminal Minds” airing on Wednesday night called “Surface Tension.” Based on some of the information that is out there, early indications are that this is going to be a particular big episode for Spencer Reid.

For one, Diana is finally returning to the show! It has been years since Jane Lynch last turned up as Reid’s mother, and the story this time will be especially emotional. After being dropped from an experimental trial for Alzheimer’s, Spencer is going to find his mother in a desperate state. There will still be a horrific case at the center of the hour (after all, this is “Criminal Minds”), but at the same time Spencer will do his best to figure out the right way to carve out a future for both him and Diana.

What is also worth noting is that this will be far from the end of Spencer’s story this season. He has a self-titled episode coming in a matter of weeks that could potentially be life-changing, and Lynch is going to appear in at least one more episode before the finale. You have not seen Matthew Gray Gubler on the show in the past couple of episodes, and “Surface Tension” will be an opportunity to make up for some lost time. Also, you’ll get a chance to see some fantastic performances to boot.

One other interesting headline that came out earlier today is that the second half of the upcoming season is going to be far more serialized than any other to date. This should provide a unique opportunity to learn more about the characters on this show, given that the serialized plot is meant to be based around a single person within the BAU. “Criminal Minds” has always given us a little bit about these character’s lives, but not a lot, so this is going to be a great way to get to know some of the people we’ve been watching for years a lot better.

If you do want to know more about the case at the center of “Surface Tension,” just note that it involves odd hieroglyphs that are found within a dead man’s armpit, ones that trace back to other bodies from the past. Is a new serial killer on the loose?
