Mindy Kaling sets new NBC pilot, will likely not impact ‘Mindy Project’ future
Is Mindy Kaling getting back in the network comedy game?
For several years, the actress / writer had herself a critically-beloved series in “The Mindy Project” on Fox, at least before they canceled it. The show was moved to Hulu later, and as of this writing, it is still going strong there.
Nonetheless, it does appear as though Kaling is ready to pull double-duty. Sources confirm that she is teaming up with “The Mindy Project” writer / executive producer Charlie Grandy for an NBC show that she could potentially recur in if it gets picked up. The show revolves around Michael and his no-ambition brother Vince, who live together mostly because Michael is a kind enough guy to allow it to happen. So what are we going to see when Priya (Kaling), Vince’s high-school girlfriend, shows up with a teenage son that he never knew about? Well, hopefully some form of hilarity.
In terms of the premise, we’ve seen this a thousand times before, given that there are elements of “Two and a Half Men” and “Grandfathered” rolled into a single show here. Then again, you can argue that many comedies are at this point derivatives of each other, and what makes them special are the various angles and the tone of them. If the right people are involved here in terms of the cast, it could turn out great.
For those wondering, Kaling’s recurring status likely means that she would still be able to do “The Mindy Project” and this show at the same time. There is no word yet on when that series is going to wrap up; all we hope is that if there is an announcement to be made on the subject, it is made at some point in advance.
What do you think about the idea of this show, and are you excited to see what Kaling can bring to the table with it? Be sure to share now with a comment, and of course we’re going to have some more news all about pilot season over the weeks to come. Be on the lookout!
