‘Salem’ season 4: Should it have been renewed?

Salem -

Tonight on WGN America, “Salem” officially reached its end with an episode that you can certainly call polarizing. Just in the past few minutes, we’ve seen people online say that this ending gave them everything that they wanted and then some; however, at the same time there are others who seem to be upset with the endgame for virtually every character in the cast. There were big moves and shocking deaths, but hey, John and Mary seem to be happy. That has to count for something, right?

The unfortunately thing about tonight being the series finale is that there was not a whole lot of time for anyone to process that the end was coming for the show; this announcement was fairly recent, which makes us wonder if it was something the network was not sure of until we were a certain percentage of the way through the season.

Based on the ending that we saw tonight, there is certainly room for a fourth season, and we imagine that the majority of the fans out there would want (understandably) to see that happen. When you look at the ratings, however, it is understandably why we’re not getting it. Season 3 averaged less than a 0.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, and was down around 40% in that measure versus season 2. At around 260,000 viewers a week, this was a drop of around 25%. The viewership just wasn’t there for the show, and that’s why it ended. We’re sure executives at WGN America are fond of it, and there’s probably a sentimental connection to it given that it was their first-ever scripted series.

Maybe at some point down the line, the stars will align and the cast can reunite for something — whether it be a TV movie or a separate project altogether. For now, we’re just grateful that the show made it this far and had the journey that it did. There are many cable series out there who don’t make it three seasons, let alone get on the air.
