‘Saturday Night Live’ writer Katie Rich apologizes, suspended indefinitely for Barron Trump Twitter joke
Over the weekend, one of the biggest mysteries that was out there on the internet was the status of one “Saturday Night Live” writer Katie Rich. At the time of Donald Trump’s Inauguration on Friday, she chose to say that the President’s son Barron “will bethis country’s first homeschool shooter.” She obviously meant it as a joke, but was immediately blasted for being insensitive and for saying something about a defenseless child.
You knew that there would be some punishment coming, and now said punishment is clear after her name did not show up in the credits for this past episode. According to Deadline, Rich is suspended indefinitely from the NBC show, and she also issued a formal apology in a post on her Twitter account. The remainder of her Twitter history is now gone, and we imagine that for her, she’ll likely be a big more careful when composing her tweets. She’s certainly still going to have to deal with people who are either blasting her for her joke or proclaiming that her apology is not sincere enough. There will be some support in there as well, but coming back from something like this really alters the entire landscape of your account.
What this all means for Rich’s long-term future is unclear, but the fact that she was not terminated means that there is a good chance that she could come back to “SNL” down the road when all of this dies down. The majority of her work was contributing to the “Weekend Update” segment, which is based mostly on current events with interviews featuring some correspondent characters sprinkled throughout.
The primary point that we’ll make on the matter is that the joke made by Rich was in extremely poor taste. She’s being held accountable for it. Now, if only there was a way to for many other people in society these days to be held accountable for their own poor taste.
As we reported earlier, the next two “SNL” hosts are going to be Kristen Stewart on February 4 and Alec Baldwin on the 11th. It remains to be seen whether or not Rich is credited for either one of those shows.
