Stephen Colbert brings back ‘Stephen Colbert’ character to recap President Obama’s time in office (video)
Just in case you want something funny to help get you through today, we come bearing what we believe to be a rather brilliant gift courtesy of Stephen Colbert: The return of his “Stephen Colbert” character that he absolutely INSISTS is not the same character that you may have seen on another network in the past. Yet, it more or less is complete with the different glasses, the raised eyebrow, and the Wriststrong bracelet that he’s wearing.
Also, he’s bringing back the return of a familiar segment from a show that may have existed on another network in “The Werd” — it’s “The Word” with one letter that’s different. It’s not the same thing at all!
This entire piece of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” last night is themed around the departure of President Obama, and there are parts of it that are snarky, wonderfully sarcastic, and also very much entertaining. However, at the same time there are also a few moments that are kind of sweet. Colbert’s been very smart about how often he brings his signature character back onto the show. He doesn’t do it so often that it starts to feel a little bit like overkill, but at the same time he doesn’t completely ignore his legacy. He recognizes that this character is a huge part of his time in late-night, and that people want to be reminded of it here and there.
In the end, this is a gift, but it’s also a reasonably rare one given that we’re probably not going to be seeing him bring it back anytime soon. Maybe at some point five or six months from now, there could be a good reason to do this — personally, we do think having Colbert bringing it out around two times a year feels perfect for how often we’d like to see this.
What do you think: Should Colbert do this impression or often, less often, or to quote a certain Goldilocks, is it just right? Share some of your thoughts in the comments below, and we’ll be back with some worthy late-night highlights soon enough. (Photo: CBS.)
