‘Major Crimes’ season 5 casts ‘Pretty Little Liars’ favorite Keegan Allen for finale
“Major Crimes” will be finally returning to TNT next month with the remainder of season 5, and one thing that is already exciting is knowing that we’re going to be seeing Keegan Allen in his first role since wrapping up “Pretty Little Liars.”
As first reported by Entertainment Weekly, Allen (who played police officer / occasional Spencer Hastings love interest Toby on the Freeform drama) is going to be coming aboard here as Aiden Reed, “a handsome and successful young restaurateur with the means, money, and determination to separate Rusty from Gus.” Could he actually be successful in this? Success sometimes can be an attractive quality, so on the basis of that alone, we do understand why there could be some drama that goes along with this.
As for how much this will be the focus of the finale, that remains to be seen given that there’s also probably going to be a case. Would “Major Crimes” really be “Major Crimes” without such a thing? They’re the bread and butter of the series.
One thing that the show’s been very smart at as of late is casting young actors and giving them an opportunity to take on something particularly different than what they are known for. Specifically, we saw this earlier this season when “Awkward” actor Brett Davern played the part of the super-terrifying Dwight Darnell.
Insofar as scheduling goes, one of the interesting quirks about Allen’s casting here is that even though he filmed “Pretty Little Liars” first, the finale for “Major Crimes” will air several weeks before the former show goes off of the air. There’s going to be a lot of Allen on TV through the spring, so if you are a fan of his, there is a lot to be excited about there. (“PLL” will resume with new episodes starting in April — we figure that we’ll have more on that soon.)

An attempt to attract younger viewers? ;-)
Anyway, some shaking up might be nice. I don’t think they will break up Rusty and Gus, though. There is definitely no shortage of romantic relationships in this show, but, next to Sykes and Cooper, this is the most plausible and convincing one.

At least SOME news on Major Crimes. But still no word on the renewal for a sixth season, right? – Shame on you, TNT!

I know it’s frustrating. I do think it will likely happen — otherwise, why not promote this as a final season? Fans deserve some sort of closure in between this and The Closer.
