‘Wayward Pines’ season 3 will not happen this summer; ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ renewal likely

Wayward Pines -It feels like a rather long time has passed since we’ve been able to present an update on the state of some of Fox’s summer shows, so what better time than the present to look at what is going on there?

Specifically, the big surprise for us this year is that Fox does not seem to be in any real hurry to start airing scripted programming again in the summer. While at TCA earlier this month, chairman Gary Newman told Deadline that there are no plans for the time being to bring anything new from the scripted realm during that time period; while “Wayward Pines” is not officially canceled, there are no plans for it to air in the near future. Maybe a summer 2018 launch? We don’t think that the show should air at any other time, but we’ll wait and see precisely what the bigwigs decide in the end we get to visit the post-apocalyptic down once more.

Meanwhile, the network also seems to be looking at bringing in more “So You Think You Can Dance,” and are smartly looking specifically at a season that will go more back to basics. Season 13 took a huge risk with the super-young dancers at the center of the show, and we don’t quite think that this is what the average viewer was all that interested in the idea. In a perfect world, what we’d want for the show is one that not only went back to its original premise, but also shook up the judging panel, bringing back Mary Murphy and either an established rotating guest-judge panel or someone like Adam Shankman, Lil C, or Kristin Chenoweth coming back in a more permanent role. Of course, Nigel Lythgoe gets to stay given that he is the heart of the and nothing would feel quite right without him there.

If “SYTYCD” does return, let’s hope for a little more in the way of ratings and exposure. It was always one of the better reality competitions, so the idea of it not moving on would be a disappointment and would make the summer TV lineup all the more sparse.

Once there is something more to report on with this handful of shows, you better believe that we’ll have it for you here at the site. (Photo: Fox.)
