Why ‘Teen Wolf’ season 6 needs Dylan O’Brien’s Stiles back in Beacon Hills
We’re now a good third of the way through the final season of “Teen Wolf,” and to date, we feel rather pleased with most of what the show is bringing to the table … with the key word there being “most.” There is something missing, and we’re not just saying that because not all of the characters yet have a full recollection of who Stiles was to them.
As a viewer, we’re starting to find ourselves missing the chemistry, and we’re also facing the sheer number of episodes that there are left. It’s not a situation anymore where there is this endless expanse of new stories to be told. There are end dates coming, and do we really think that ten or eleven episodes of Stiles back in Beacon Hills will be enough in order to properly tell that story? It’s hard to say given the number of different balls in the air that will be present once we get to that point. After all, we’re going to have to look at the relationship he’s got with his father, whatever’s going on with him and Lydia, and then re-establishing the friendship that he has with Scott. There is a lot that has to happen to give viewers a satisfying ending.
This is a show hovering under a specter of darkness. Despite the enthusiasm of the fan base, not a whole lot of great stuff ever happens to the characters themselves; typically, a season involves them finding ways to narrowly escape death repeatedly. It would be nice to start to see things turn around for them in the final episodes and have some sort of further hope of happiness.
Now, it would be wrong to not acknowledge the tremendous challenges the “Teen Wolf” team faced in crafting these final episodes around several different challenges related to Dylan O’Brien’s schedule and his recovery from a serious injury on the “Maze Runner” set. Still, we want to hold out hope that one way or another, they figured out how to make the next several episodes work in terms of tying up the Ghost Rider story with Stiles trapped in another world, bringing him back, and establishing further whatever the endgame is going to ultimately be. We’ll get a sense of the movement forward come Tuesday night when the next new episode airs.
