‘Scandal’ season 6 promo hypes up all the crazy

ScandalIt’s true: There are still TWO more weeks to go until “Scandal” season 6 officially arrives on ABC. We thought for a time that the return of Kerry Washington and company to ABC was only going to be one week away, but then something else came in and messed up the entire equation: A “20/20” special featuring President-Elect Donald Trump and his family.

As a result of this scheduling quirk, “Scandal” is now not returning with the rest of the #TGIT lineup until Thursday, January 26, and the promo below is, at least in our mind, the show’s way of telling you that it wants to make up for it. Obviously, nobody in the cast and crew has any control over the schedule, and while they likely wanted to be talking and tweeting about the show next week, that ultimately was not possible.

This promo is effectively a good reflection of the show’s best and worst qualities. From a positive standpoint, there is a lot of good drama apparently in here, and that includes some romance, some betrayal, and finally some answers on the subject of who won the election. That was the biggest cliffhanger as established earlier this year, and it is nice to get a little more information in regards to answers to that.

Yet, at the same time, we do wish in some ways that the show would try to lessen the amount of “one crazy twist after another” hype that they do, mostly because they are the show’s own worst enemy more often than not. They spend so much time often promoting themselves as “crazy” that they probably focus way more on trying to one-up themselves than they really should. The optimal strategy instead would be to focus more on some of the great performances and the characters that they have, and then lessen the twists. That makes them all the more powerful on the moments that they do happen — which is hopefully a little bit more infrequently than we’d get them otherwise.
