Golden Globes 2017: Jimmy Fallon’s teleprompter breaks during opening monlogue
The Golden Globe Awards took place on Sunday night, and it took almost no time at all for something to go awry — which seems to be at the theme for this show more often than not.
Mere moments after walking out on the stage following the cold open, host Jimmy Fallon’s teleprompter proceeded to cease working. Eventually, the producers and the crew were able to reboot it, but not after an awkward beginning to the show.
Interestingly, it continued to remain pretty awkward throughout given that not all of Jimmy’s jokes landed. His Donald Trump barbs were funny, but not appreciated by all of the people who were in the audience. Meanwhile, he had an Amazon joke that sank pretty quickly, but his comment about “Manchester by the Sea” being more depressing than anything else in 2016 was worthy of laughs aplenty.
If we were to try and rate the strength of Fallon’s monologue as a whole, we would say that the biggest thing it brought to the table was awkward energy. He was thrown off his game, and you could see yet. At the same time, this made some of his jokes (political ones aside) a little bit looser because he was able to be a little more off-the-cuff than he would have otherwise. Sometimes, if things are a little too pre-planned, it can cause a few problems for everyone involved.
If you did miss the opening — whether it be the monologue to the musical number — you can take a look at some of that in the video below. Even with some of the flaws, the opening is still worth watching for anyone out there who did not have a chance to see it live.
