Is Sabrina, the Teenage Witch heading to The CW’s ‘Riverdale’?
In a day full of surprising CW headlines courtesy of the network’s time at the TCA Winter Press Tour, we come now bearing what may be one of the most surprising headlines that we’ve seen so far: We could be seeing a revival (of sorts) of “Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.”
If you may recall, this show starring Melissa Joan Hart became one of the most popular shows of its generation, and helped to define ABC further for their family programming. Yet, what many may not know about her is something that ties into the upcoming CW series “Riverdale,” and that is something Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa discusses further to Entertainment Weekly:
“Some people don’t even know that Sabrina is in the Archie family … There is absolutely a universe where Sabrina pops up in Riverdale or one town over in Greendale. Certainly, the priority is launching Riverdale and making sure that show is as good as it can be and as embraced as we want it to be.”
We’ll be honest here when we say that personally, we were utterly oblivious to the notion that Sabrina had any ties to the Archie characters at all, and the idea of this is rather exciting; however, at the same exact time we are hardly oblivious of the notion that were she to appear on “Riverdale” this coming season, we would be looking at a side of the character that could not be any more different from the one played by Hart. This show is meant to be much darker and far more serious than the one established through the comics or on ABC; we’ve almost thought of it as a new version of “Gossip Girl” without the big city and in a more idyllic community.
This show as a whole seems to be courting and welcoming controversy, knowing that their vision of the Archie world is likely going to be one that leaves many offended. Early reviews so far suggest that there could be something here, and as a result of that, this is at least a show to have on your radar. Good storytelling is good storytelling, and it doesn’t matter if you are augmenting a comic-book franchise or doing something far more by-the-book.
