Golden Globes 2017: ‘Outlander,’ Sam Heughan, Gillian Anderson, Anna Faris among biggest reader snubs
In addition to profiling all of the different categories and awards tonight with the Golden Globes, one of the other things we did that was new this year was taking a closer look at what were some of the bigger snubs left off of the ballot, based primarily on pre-show buzz and past voting trends from other awards shows.
FX executives have coined the era that we’re in “Peak TV,” largely because there are countless more viewing options that are out there — though in spite of that, the Globes still limit their categories, for the most part, to only five choices. This high competition is even more obvious when you think for a minute about categories like Supporting Actor and Actress, where performers from comedies, dramas, and limited series / TV movies are all lumped together.
Over the past few weeks, many of you have voted on which shows and performers were the most overlooked in the initial nominations, and as we await the start of the Globes tonight on NBC, we thought we’d share with you the results!
Biggest Snubs – Golden Globes 2017, per the CarterMatt readers
Drama Series – “Outlander.” This vote was massively tilted in one direction. More than 90% of readers decided almost universally that the Starz drama, previously nominated, should have been up for an award again.
Drama Actor – Sam Heughan, “Outlander.” This vote was also commanding, with more than 82% going with Heughan as worthy of a little more love from the HFPA voters.
Drama Actress – Gillian Anderson, “The Fall.” While she was always a longshot for a nomination, there is a history of Globes voters choosing international fare. More than 63% of you felt she should’ve been on the ballot.
Comedy Series – “Speechless.” Often new comedies do tend to get some love, and while this particular one didn’t get a nomination, it did win its poll here with more than 43%.
Comedy Actor – Bill Hader, “Documentary Now!.” Like Anderson and “The Fall,” this was another under-the-radar snub, but more than 50% of our readers felt Hader should have been included.
Comedy Actress – Anna Faris, “Mom.” Despite her co-star Allison Janney often getting a ton of nominations, Faris is frequently snubbed — judging from how she won our poll with more than 40%, maybe awards shows should consider her a little more seriously.
Limited Series / TV Movie – “American Horror Story: Roanoke.” It was the year of the comeback for the FX anthology, and more than 60% of our readers felt it merited something more from the HFPA.
Supporting Actor – Tobias Menzies, “Outlander.” It was a clean sweep for “Outlander” in our snub polls — it and its stars won every one in which they were nominated. Menzies had more than 66% of the vote here.
Supporting Actress – Kate McKinnon, “Saturday Night Live.” Voting was only open for this category for a reasonably short amount of time, but Kate still won here with almost 65%.
