‘Sherlock’ season 4, episode 2 video: Toby Jones enters the mind of Culverton Smith
Tomorrow night, “Sherlock” season 4 will be bringing to you an episode entitled “The Lying Detective,” which is one that will have a variety of orders of business in which it is trying to achieve. For one, this could be a story of recovery. We don’t know how much forward the show is jumping, but given the death of Mary Watson, it feels inevitable that this is some territory that is going to need to be explored as we take a step or two ahead into the future.
Here’s the issue we see for Watson in particular: He is going to need to rely on someone, but Sherlock may not be the best person in the world to fill that role. He’s so emotionally distant that trying to get through to him for support may prove difficult. That may be increased tenfold by the fact that there is a new villain now on the loose in Culverton Smith, someone who has a knack for being horrible and doing horrible things as a result. To make matters worse, he may also be a complete psychopath.
In the video below via the official series, you can get a little bit of insight from none other than Toby Jones about playing this villain, who is in some ways detached from the opinion of others and in his own world. He has a very high opinion of himself, and is incredibly capable of doing terrible things to other people. His sights will be set on Sherlock at some point, but specifics beyond that are not entirely clear. For now, all we know is that he is rather dangerous, and may be every bit as capable of killing as anyone else we’ve met.
Following this episode, there will be only one more this season. Therefore, let’s hope that there is some major progress made, and we are left in a spot that at the very least gives us the smallest semblance of hope that all can end up okay.
