Golden Globes 2017: Will Lena Headey, Chrissy Metz, or Thandie Newton will Supporting Actress?
We’ve spent a good part of the past two weeks discussing notable nominees and snubs when it comes to the 2017 Golden Globe Awards, and today, we’ve finally made it to the final category of the list: Supporting Actress.
If you read our articles about the Supporting Actor category already, then odds are, you already know that we have some major frustrations with the way in which things are being done. Specifically, we hate the fact that comedy, drama, and limited series performers have to go up against each other. While there are several different outstanding people below, at the same time we do very much lament the fact that there are also many other people who we wish could have made it onto this list somewhere. (We’ll be back later to talk a little bit further about some of the snubs.)
Below, you can see our full analysis of the category based on the nominees! Following that, be sure to vote in the attached poll for who you think is the most deserving of the group.
The nominees
Olivia Colman, “The Night Manager” (AMC)
Lena Headey, “Game of Thrones” (HBO)
Chrissy Metz, “This Is Us” (NBC)
Mandy Moore, “This Is Us” (NBC)
Thandie Newton, “Westworld” (HBO)
Who will win – We do honestly believe this is one of the toughest categories of the entire field this year, mostly because we do think that almost any one of these people can win. Headey was sensational this year, and Metz and Moore were a part of the best network show of the fall. As of right now, we’ll say that the advantage goes to Newton based in part on recency, in part on the greatness of her performance, and in part on also Moore and Metz likely canceling each other out.
Who should win – This is once again incredibly difficult. It’s almost a tie for us between Metz, who plays a powerful and inspirational character, and Headey, who pretty much plays the opposite of that. We’ll say that the newness of “This Is Us” wants us to give her the edge here, but it’s hard to be unhappy about any of these women winning. Colman is probably the biggest longshot just because “The Night Manager” is a little more under-the-radar than the other nominees, but this series is, even with its nominations, rather underrated.
