Mariah Carey and the great ‘New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’ conspiracy theory
We will start this particular article with a surprise admission: That we’re still even discussing “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” to begin with, given that this is two days removed from the actual holiday. It’s not exactly often that this happens, so maybe Mariah Carey should be thankful for that in some sort of awkward way (though we imagine that she probably won’t be).
Now, let’s talk conspiracy theories! We live in an age where everything seems to be a conspiracy, so as a result of that the idea of Mariah being left out on the stage for the flounder for the sake of getting ratings actually doesn’t seem all that odd in comparison to some other things we’ve seen with this franchise over the years. This is what the singer’s manager Stella Bulochnikov does claim was the purpose of the entire incident, where she didn’t perform and at times struggled with the backing track when she did, in a new interview with Us Weekly:
“I will never know the truth, but I do know that we told them three times that her mic pack was not working and it was a disastrous production … I’m certainly not calling the FBI to investigate. It is what it is: New Year’s Eve in Times Square. Mariah did them a favor. She was the biggest star there and they did not have their s–t together.
“They acknowledged that they knew her inner ears were not working. They did not cut to a commercial. They did not cut to the West Coast feed, they left her out there to get ratings.”
If the show did cut to commercial, we do genuinely think that this would have created a lot of different buzz and led to ABC getting accusations that they were being cruel to the singer in some way — after all, if we didn’t see her perform, nobody would have seen what transpired and would have likely assumed that she had a great performance in the end. We do agree that there were obvious technical problems, but we don’t see how this improved ratings in the slightest. People who were watching the performance previously still were, and people who heard about this after the fact likely just went and found it on YouTube or somewhere else.
