‘Sherlock’ season 4, episode 1: What to expect in ‘The Six Thatchers’
You’ve been waiting for the arrival of “Sherlock” season 4 for quite some time. It’s been a good three years since a full season aired, and while “The Abominable Bride” in 2016 was entertaining, it also wasn’t the vintage version of the show. It was more the odd test-tube experiment from showrunners Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, who wanted to try something different just to see what would happen.
Now, we’re venturing back into familiar territory for tonight’s “The Six Thatchers,” which will mark the beginning of a very different sort of season. If you haven’t been reading a whole lot of the press because of the holidays, we wanted to give you a brief taste of what to expect in this article.
1. The big change for the main characters of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson comes courtesy of their personal lives. John and Mary have welcomed a child, and Sherlock will have grown protective of the family in a way that only he can. This is not a character who shows love per se, but he is a character who does love. There’s just a sense of uniqueness that comes via how he does it.
2. This is going to be at times the darkest season to date, and there will be many twists and turns that cause our characters to be haunted. There will be lighter moments (this is the same “Sherlock”), but expect this season to test relationships like never before. You can get some insight into that in the video at the bottom of this article featuring some members of the cast.
3. As for the specific plot of Sunday’s episode, Sherlock, in the midst of seeing if Moriarty will strike again from beyond the grave, learns about a strange case that is baffling Scotland Yard. Someone is destroying images of Margaret Thatcher, and no one precisely knows why. Is it time for Britain’s greatest detective to go on the case?
