Golden Globes 2017: Will Rachel Bloom, Issa Rae, or Gina Rodriguez win Comedy Actress?

Given how many different shows are out there at present, it’s really not all that much of a surprise that the voters for the Golden Globes over at the Hollywood Foreign Press couldn’t quite make up their minds in terms of nominees for Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy.

Below, you can check out our full take on the category, including who we think is the most likely to take home the prize, but also who should based on everything that we’ve seen over the course of the past year. At the end, there’ll be a poll for you to share your own picks, which we’ll be revealing in a special article the morning the show airs on January 8.

The Nominees

Rachel Bloom, “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” (The CW)

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “Veep” (HBO)

Sarah Jessica Parker, “Divorce” (HBO)

Issa Rae, “Insecure” (HBO)

Gina Rodriguez, “Jane the Virgin” (The CW)

Tracee Ellis Ross, “black-ish” (ABC)

Who will win – Of this group, it really is rather unpredictable given that you have several familiar faces, a new face in Rae, and then a familiar face in Parker who is here for a new show. Given the love that the HFPA has for her, we’d say that Parker is most likely to be the favorite, but this could really tilt on a dime. Given how depressing much of 2016 has been, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see someone from a happier show like Bloom or Rodriguez take this home for some of the escapism that they provide — plus their amazing capacity for humor and relatability.

Who should win – Like we said, this one is very tough, but we’re personally going to say Rae just for the authenticity, the bravery, and the humor that she injected herself into on almost every episode of her new HBO comedy. If not her, then Rodriguez’s work is consistently astounding and we especially found it fantastic through the opening few episodes of this season. After all, life changed for Jane in a very significant way, and her performance / the storytelling of the show handled it in a heartfelt way that still fit with the tone of the show.

As you would expect given this field, though, there’s really no wrong winner — even someone like Louis-Dreyfus, who’s seemingly nominated for everything under the sun and has won many times over, was as brilliant as ever on “Veep” this past season.

Now, we turn this over to you! Vote in the poll below, and tell us more of your thoughts on the race in the attached comments.
