‘Vikings’ season 4, episode 16: Could Travis Fimmel return?
Tonight, “Vikings” aired its biggest and perhaps most shocking episode of the entire series, given that we saw what was the departure of the biggest major character in the history of the show in Ragnar. It was a moment that was predestined thanks to history, but that didn’t make the incident with the pit of snakes all the more terrifying. The moment marks a sea change in the series moving forward, and we also have confirmation that this was the last time that we’re going to see Travis Fimmel as this character.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Fimmel confirmed that the show isn’t going to be doing the same trickery to bring back dead characters that others have done over time — and there is a very clear reason for it:
“I’m not returning. It sort of doesn’t make sense. My character is an atheist so I’m not going to be coming up in any ghost, religious ghostly images or anything. I think you have to be very religious for people to have that belief in you.”
Of course, we’re bummed with the idea of saying goodbye to someone like Fimmel given the level of his talent and also what he could have brought to the series moving forward. Yet, at the same time this is what makes sense, and it’s not like the show is suddenly going to change things up. This taste of the time Ivar spent with his father is going to lead him down a trail of vengeance, one that is going to be incredibly brutal and lead to a lot of chaos, danger, and despair as we move even further into the future of the series. The impact of the death will also of course reverberate over to many other major characters in due time. There are still five episodes left this season, and that offers up plenty of time on the series.
