‘Agents of SHIELD’ season 4 spoilers: Speaking further on Coulson, May, and trust issues
Unfortunately, moving into the second part of this season there’s a different sort of trust issue that Coulson will be facing, given that the Melinda May he is spending an extreme amount of time with is not the same Melinda May that he has come to know over the years. This is the latest life-model decoy, the creation of Aida, who at present is serving as the Big Bad of the next part of the season.
What makes the issues with Coulson and “May” even more challenging moving forward is that the two are going to bond in ways that they haven’t to date, and that’s going to be all the more devastating to Phil when he realizes that the person he has been spending such a large array of time with is not the person he knows at all. In speaking on this subject further to TVLine, executive producer Jed Whedon had the following to say:
“Trust is always an issue in a spy organization. But it’s much worse when you don’t know if the person next to you is the person next to you … We want to not just tell scare stories of things popping out of closets, but the emotional stories — and when you get into trust, that’s when things get emotional.”
While there was certainly some emotion within the Ghost Rider arc, the difference this time around is that you’re now dealing with characters that we already have a relationship with as opposed to someone we’re just meeting. Even Aida at the moment is someone we’ve seen in several episodes, so there is at least a sentiment as to who she is.
