CarterMatt Awards 2016: Alycia Debnam-Carey of ‘The 100’ wins Top Actress in runaway vote
Every now and then, we get a chance to see history in the making, and this is precisely what we had when it came to the voting for Top Actress at the CarterMatt Awards this year. In the five years that we’ve done had these awards, we had the biggest margin of victory here that we’ve seen to date — and it’s not a situation where there was a lack of votes. We simply had one person come out completely on fire, dominating this category off of the sheer strength of her supporters.
That person is Alycia Debnam-Carey of “The 100.”
How did the votes stack up specifically? She had more than 97% of them, which is more or less the whole pie if you want to round up. This wasn’t a situation where it took her fans a whole lot of time to mobilize, either. She build up such a commanding lead in this category so early that it may have seemed to other contenders like there was no way for them to catch up — and they were probably right to think that.
There is a reason why the vote was so dominant, and it stems back to the performance that Debnam-Carey gave on “The 100” as Lexa. She inspired people to support and love her; we’ve said this a few times now, but this is a performance that really transcended a character on a TV show and became a movement. She was the warrior that many viewers want themselves to be, they related to her story, and they were heartbroken with her death. Losing Lexa was a watershed moment in 2016, one that generated strong reaction all over the internet. For now, we’d tell you to remember some of the wonderful moments that she gave you on the show; even though she may be gone, the impact of the performance and the movement still remains. She was nominated for this category in the strength of doing so much in a relatively limited amount of time, and this victory is further testament to her work.
This win follows up Melissa McBride of “The Walking Dead,” who took home Top Actress in 2015.
Congratulations further to Alycia and her fans!
