‘Call the Midwife’ season 6 spoilers: Charlotte Ritchie talks one difficult subject to be explored

Call -

In the days that follow the South Africa-set Christmas Special for “Call the Midwife,” one of the biggest things that we’ve come to know is mostly that Barbara and Tom are engaged, and that the midwives of Nonnatus House were able to assist the Hope Clinic in some rather substantial ways.

Now that this story seems to be starting to wind down a little bit, the time is here to look forward on the upcoming sixth season of the show premiering in the new year — one that there is not too much known about just yet. However, one of the series’ stars in Charlotte Ritchie (who plays Barbara) did make it clear to the Radio Times that one of the controversial topics that the characters on the show would be dealing with is FGM, otherwise known as female genital mutilation:

“We look into FGM. There’s a Somali community in the East End and one of our mothers has had FGM … We spoke to survivors of FGM and their children and their perspective on it as people whose mothers had undergone and their stories and each story is so different. It’s really been fascinating to learn about. It is a taboo issue and it’s not easy to write about because there are so many different elements to it.”

Given that this is “Call the Midwife,” you know that this is a story that is going to be handled with a great deal of care and sensitivity for the women involved. This is not a show meant to trivialize; instead, it’s one where a focus is cast upon the present using stories and events from the past. We see the evolution of the world of the 1960’s through these characters’ eyes, and the struggle of what they go through is in many ways a reflection of much of what so many people are going through today.
