‘The Bachelor’ spotlight: Will Josephine Tutman stand out in field of nurses?

Josephine -What do we have here? Another nurse on “The Bachelor” this season? There are more nurses than any other job this season, which is completely random since we’re usually lucky to get one or two. Josephine Tutman is an interesting case given that we’ve seen some signals that she could be fun … but only a few, since there’s very little out there in terms of information about her.

Here’s the good news: Josephine mentions neither Olivia Pope or dolphins, which helps her to stand out from about 80% of the contestants on this season at the moment. (Before we start the rest of the spotlight, credit to Reality Steve for having her last name — she was one of the tougher contestants to track down online.)

Age – 24. She falls into the younger quadrant of contestants this year, but she’s not the youngest person taking part this season. To avoid being repetitive, we won’t get into many of our frustrations about the ages of the hopefuls with a bachelor who is in his mid 30’s.

Occupation – Registered nurse. This is a bit of a point of contention, given that there are some places online where she was listed as “unemployed nurse.” We don’t know if this was changed somewhere along the line because it sounded a little bit mean (the show does love to do this with their job descriptions here and there), or who knows? Maybe she’s not unemployed anymore.

Not to dive too deep into job stereotypes, but Whitney from Chris Soules’ season is a good example of why some nurses do well on this show: They have a natural tendency to care for others and make you feel special, even in the midst of surrounding chaos. They’re not used to standing out in a crowd, so the transition into the competition isn’t as jarring as with other jobs.

Location – Santa Cruz, California. We just wrote about Jasmine Goode, another contestant this season from the Bay Area.

Things to know – Something that is very interesting about Josephine almost right away is that she is Jewish, and that’s not necessarily that common on this show, which tends to be heavy with people who are either Christian or don’t really have any affiliation. (She does make it clear that she’s open to all religions.) She also says that if she could be anyone else for a day she’d be Stephen Hawking, which shows that she does pursue intelligence and isn’t just about celebrity, money, power, or any of those things.

Beyond that, the only other note of interest that we’ve got from Josephine is that she admires her brother.

How is she actually going to do? – There are things about Josephine that are interesting; her religion may help her stand out in the crowd in a way that her job doesn’t, and she doesn’t appear to be overtly superficial. We can see her lasting until around the top 8, but not getting a lot of screen time along the way. There’s just not much about her that makes us think that her personality will pop.
