‘The X Factor’ UK: Matt Terry’s winner’s single ‘When Christmas Comes Around’ falls to #8
When know that in the United Kingdom, being the Christmas #1 is a huge achievement. It’s the busiest shopping time of the year, so being able to dominate the holidays by and large is a symbol of some tremendous success.
Unfortunately, for reigning “X Factor” champ Matt Terry, it simply was not in the cards for him this year as his “When Christmas Comes Around” fell to #8 in its second week on the charts after premiering at #3. Surprisingly, neither having the songwriting talents of Ed Sheeran or the Christmas theme could get the song any higher on the list. It was hard to necessarily see a path for it hitting #1, but at the same exact time it did feel like it was likely to at least finish top five entering the week.
For those curious, Clean Bandit’s “Rockabye” landed the #1 spot for the seventh straight week while “Just Hold On,” a song featuring former “X Factor” contestant Louis Tomlinson alongside Steve Aoki, ended up scoring the #3 spot. There was a Christmas song in the top five, but it was Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” easily the biggest Christmas song of the past twenty or so years and arguably one of the biggest in the era of modern music.
While it’s a bummer for Matt to fall out of the top ten so soon (especially given that a holiday track is almost certainly doomed after this week), we do think that there will be more chances for him in the new year. He’ll get to take part in the tour, and then after that he will have another shot to hit the recording studio to try and put out a big hit for him to stay relevant for many years to come.
