‘Call the Midwife’ 2016 Christmas Special video: See Barbara, Trixie’s arrival in South Africa

Trixie -

Sunday is Christmas Day, and with that in mind it’s time for the annual “Call the Midwife” special to air on ITV. We imagine that this is going to be a rather emotional affair, but judging from the sneak peek below, also a fairly funny one.

This preview starts off within the dark, gloomy skies of Poplar, where the entire Nonnatus family is coming off of their own holiday celebration. However, there is other business to attend to as many of the characters are going to be heading all the way down to South Africa to help with the Hope Clinic, which is low on staff and resources and very close to shutting down. It’s a place to for them to use their skills in the field and do very rewarding work — but it’s also a place that was definitely not easy for most of the characters to get to.

In the sneak peek below, you learn that this entire crew actually traveled down to Africa by boat, even though you don’t actually see that part of the trip play out. At the point we reconvene with them they are aboard a bus, Barbara is clearly having a hard time handling the high temperatures that comes with being on the other side of the world. One thing to remember here is that while it is winter back home for these women, it is the thick of summer in South Africa.

The drama is almost surely to come a little bit later in the special (this is “Call The Midwife after all), once the ladies get settled in and we start to learn a little bit more about the surroundings. For the time being, this preview is short, sweet, and for the most part lighthearted. Hopefully the ending is the same way so that Christmas does not end on a particularly depressing note.
