‘Longmire’ season 6: What’s the desired endgame for Henry Standing Bear?
Earlier this week, we started off a new article series talking about “Longmire” through the lens of the following question: What should the endgame be for many of your favorite characters? It’s not something that we had to spend a lot of time investing in before now, but given that the final season is here, this marks a chance to start to understand where these stories could be going, and if there’s anything that needs to happen before we make it to the end.
With that, today the spotlight is on Lou Diamond Phillips and his character of Henry Standing Bear, a man who certainly has evolved since the early days of the show. He’s fought a tough legal battle, taken on the title of Hector, and most recently was beaten within an inch of his life. Almost anything would be better than the sort of state that he is in at present, so that is absolutely something to think about and further consider. Personally, we do want to set our personal sights a little bit higher than this.
Resolve the friendship with Walt – This may not be an easy thing to do given exactly everything that they’ve been through over the past season, but it’s needed — in order for this series to be truly whole, we need these guys to be good friends and to be upfront with each other again. This may not come easy, especially to someone like Henry who has a thing or two for keeping secrets, but it is something that he really needs to spend some time figuring out how to do.
No more Hector – This is an effective story for now, but it’s not feasible for him to be this vigilante forever. Maybe Henry can find a way to get into politics, be more involved with Mathias, or simply pass along the torch somewhere else. There are other ways to get the reservation the help it needs beyond being a masked vigilante at night.
Survive the cliffhanger – Obviously. This feels like a no-brainer.
Spend some more time with other characters – We want to see Henry more around Vic, Cady, and The Ferg this time around. As good as his story’s been for the past couple of years, we’ve certainly seen him separated rather extensively from the rest of the gang.
Is what he has enough? – This one is somewhat complicated. Will owning the Red Pony and being single be enough for him the rest of his life? We do contemplate the idea of a new love interest, but at the same time we don’t want to suggest this as an endgame idea for every character. If it’s the right person with Henry, it could be interesting, but for now the main priority for him should just be keeping the bar afloat and getting his life a little more firmly together.

Having had a half century friendship end abruptly, I can certainly feel Henry’s pain. And even if they can patch things up, their relationship will never be the same so I hope that is reflected in the writing. I also have a fervent wish that Tantoo Cardinal (the Crow Medicine Woman) is the one that rescues Henry; I think that would be a nice circle since she helped Gab.
While the rez certainly needs someone like Hector, Henry can’t be all things to all people. Maybe having Cady there to help clear things up legally will decrease the need for Hector-type actions. And an alliance between Henry and Mathias would be wonderful.
