‘Code Black’ season 2, episode 11 reaction: Surviving the blackout
Tonight, CBS gave us the final episode of “Code Black” before the winter hiatus, and given that this is the holiday season, the writers obviously decided to throw us a little bit of a bone in not make us entirely miserable by the end of it.
If we are going to talk about the most tear-jerking story of the night, you just have to look at the story of Blanche, an elderly woman who was convinced that she was living during the era of World War II during the present. While she did pass in the final ten minutes of the episode, this wasn’t one of those miserable deaths where a doctor made a mistake or where they bled out profusely. Instead, it was simple, meaningful, and she was at peace.
The other major moments of drama tonight occurred as a result of a blackout across the hospital, one that sent the hospital and nurses scrambling. In almost every way you look at it this was terrible, but we also feel at the same time this was the sort of thing that really rallied the majority of the doctors together towards a unified cause of saving lives, which is not something that they always have in the midst of petty disagreements — plus also the major ones. Also, we had a delivery in an elevator, which had to be one of the crazier ones that we’ve seen on any medical show — and we’ve seen plenty of them.
Oh, and we got our mama back. What’s not to celebrate about that? We gotta take these celebrations wherever we can.
Beyond the emotional departure of Blanche from this world, one of the other things we’ll take away from this episode is Willis still struggling in some ways to cope with reality. He excels in some pressure situations that remind him of his time in service, but can he function as well day-to-day? Does he want to? Both are interesting questions in their own way.
