‘Pretty Little Liars’ movie not happening — for now
If there is one thing that we’ve certainly come to learn over time in the modern age of TV, it is that a show being “over” rarely ever means that it is. We’ve got “Twin Peaks” coming back now decades later, “Gilmore Girls” returning after a significant hiatus, and revivals of other shows like “Arrested Development” already out there.
Therefore, the idea of “Pretty Little Liars” taking an extended nap and coming back at some point in the future is not altogether insane at all. As a matter of fact, it’s something that is fairly easy to imagine from the simple vantage point that this show is incredibly popular, if the thirst for it remains, we can easily see there being enough of a demand in a couple of years’ time that the cast would want to get back together and do it.
Speaking to Allure, Troian Bellisario (Spencer) made it clear that there were some movie talks bounced around while also denying in the interview that there was any immediate word on a spin-off to the show:
“I know that they’re constantly trying to make something happen in the form of a movie. It was something that we all talked about a lot, but last I heard there was no movement. But that doesn’t mean it’s dead in the water.”
We figure that the first order of business before even seeing if a movie is something that can happen is seeing precisely what the audience reaction to the upcoming series finale is. While we of course want to think that there are plenty of people out there who want to see a new version of the show, the reality is still that this may not necessarily be the case if the finale doesn’t leave an open door for one or kills off a number of characters. There is that expression to “not count chickens before they hatch,” and it certainly applies here.
