‘Code Black’ season 2, episode 11 preview: Facing a blackout

Code Black -

There are not exactly many new episodes of anything airing on network TV tonight, but there is one pretty-significant exception to the rule happening over on CBS. After all, you’re going to have a chance to check out a new episode of “Code Black.” It’s one that could feature one of the biggest crises that the hospital has faced to date, and we specifically could see some medical situations spiral out of control as a result.

While we’re not positive that this is a Christmas-themed episode, CBS clearly wants you to think that it is by putting some Christmas music in the promo.

Synopsis – “A code black at Angels Memorial takes a turn for the worse when a city- wide blackout leaves the hospital without power or back-up generators. As Campbell and Leanne divert high-risk patients to a nearby care center, Elliot and Heather are trapped in an elevator with a woman in labor, and Willis and Dr. Nolan (Kathleen Rose Perkins) try to help a 92-year-old woman who thinks it’s 1942.”

The promo does not necessarily provide a bevy of further insight, but at the same time you do get a sense through watching it of the stakes that the doctors are going to face. Given how much of medicine today is operated by electricity, losing much of that should prove incredibly challenging. The fact that the generators are also down is the part of this that really surprises us and makes the problem significantly more widespread. In particular, the elevator birth should be the peak of the episode in terms of drama. It’s probably a good thing in a way that it’s broken, since otherwise could you imagine seeing it jump all over the place?

From a more commercial standpoint, one other interesting thing about this episode could be seeing how it fares in the ratings. This is not a show that is a powerhouse in terms of viewership, but could it pick up more with less competition on the air? Time will tell.
