Tony Bennett’s 90th birthday: Lady Gaga, Billy Joel, Elton John, more perform on NBC special

NBCTonight, NBC is doing something a little bit extraordinary in that they are celebrating the life of an icon in Tony Bennett. There are few people who have a legacy that stems as deep as his, and the same goes for the sort of roster of celebrity friends that he has.

Over the course of the upcoming two-hour broadcast, you’re going to get a wide array of performances featuring the likes of Andrea Bocelli, Michael Bublé, Lady Gaga, Billy Joel, Elton John, Diana Krall, k.d. lang, Leslie Odom Jr., Rufus Wainwright and Stevie Wonder. Meanwhile, there are going to be some non-musical guests in attendance for the evening, as well, including Alec Baldwin, Steve Buscemi, Kevin Spacey and Bruce Willis — the appearance of Baldwin should be particularly fun, because he does a really great impersonation of Bennett that he’s done on “Saturday Night Live.” You can argue as to whether or not it is anywhere near as good as his impersonation of Donald Trump, but it’s up there.

Hopefully, we’ll be able to have some videos to put up in this story of some of the performances, given that the event was pre-taped and the network should in theory have some of these videos at the ready in theory like they did with the “America’s Got Talent” Holiday Spectacular last night. We’ll just have to see if that happens.

If nothing else, we congratulate Bennett on what has to be an incredible celebration and achievement in his life!

If there is one thing that is somewhat funny about this special airing right now, it is that he actually turned 90 all the way back in August. Is this one of the most delayed birthday parties in existence? We gotta think that it is somewhere high on the list, no? If that’s the worst thing that we have to say about the special, we figure that we’re in pretty good shape. (Photo: NBC.)
