‘Call the Midwife’ Christmas Special: Laura Main outlines story for Shelagh, other characters

Shelagh -

There is a wide array of different television that you’re going to have a chance to watch come Christmas Day, but “Call the Midwife” is more than likely going to be the best available options out there. This special should serve as an opportunity to see a message of hope and of charity play out, while at the same time exploring some of the same themes that should be familiar to many people out there.

One of the characters who will be traveling to South Africa is Shelagh, who works alongside some of the midwives of Nonnatus House to ensure that there is proper care being distributed at a clinic there. They are in desperate need, and in some ways this situation could reduce the midwives and the doctors to their core instincts. Their amount of technology is limited, but it will be even more so once these travels are complete.

In speaking about this special further now in an interview with Stuff in New Zeleand, Laura Main (who plays Shelagh) passed down a little bit more information in terms of what you can expect to see over the course of this special airing:

“A nun has passed away and support is desperately needed … They are totally understaffed. One of the sisters is a doctor who runs this clinic and gives medical help to people in the surrounding villages. It’s just getting down to what (the East End midwives) take for granted. One of biggest things is they want to run a polio vaccination programme so for Doctor Turner and Shelagh that is particularly appealing.”

Our biggest hope for the special is that the characters are able to help in whatever way that they can, and that they take some of these lessons back home to Poplar. We don’t anticipate that there will be anything revelatory beyond that, and ultimately we’ll be rather fine if that does turn out to be the case.
