‘Doctor Who’ season 10: Showrunner doesn’t see show as about the longer arc
Are there some storylines on “Doctor Who” that carry over from one episode to the next? In some ways, the answer to that is yes; yet, at the same time, we feel like you can pretty easily say that these particular stories are not necessarily the focal point of the larger show. This is a show very much about the present, which is ironic given that you are talking about a show in time and space. It’s not so much about anything happening down the road or some deeper mythology you have to worry about.
In speaking about this subject further (per Digital Spy), executive producer / showrunner Steven Moffat had the following to say:
“Doctor Who gives the impression of having a huge amount of lore, but when you write it all down, you can’t fill a page … One of the great things about the Doctor is, to this day, he cannot be bothered with a backstory, or a name, or any reason that he does what he does. So you don’t actually have much to worry about.”
While Moffat did contend that there are often longer arcs in his seasons, he made it clear that when you looked at the total number of minutes that they filled, they did really pale in comparison to some of the story-of-the-week plots. That is at the moment what the focus will probably be as we enter the tenth season in the spring, which features our first appearance of Pearl Mackie as the new companion to The Doctor in Bill. You’ll certainly get to know her, but our overall sentiment is that this is going to be happening across the course of the entire season rather than just cramming it all in over a single week.
Remember now that the “Doctor Who” Christmas Special is airing now in a matter of weeks, and we’ll have some further news about that before long over at the link here. (Photo: BBC.)
