Should ‘Gotham’ season 3 be impacted in any way by ‘Gotham City Sirens’ movie?
Even if you consider yourself to be a reasonably casual fan of all things DC, odds are that you likely heard the news from earlier in the month that the comic company is in the process of launching a “Gotham City Sirens” movie that will star Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and will also be executive-produced by both her and “Suicide Squad” director David Ayer. This is a chance to further along the story of one of the comic world’s most-popular characters right now, while also getting an opportunity to introduce for the first time Catwoman and Poison Ivy in the new DC Movie Universe.
We’re not here so much to discuss this in terms of the movies, since that’s not very much the focus of this site. However, the question that we do find ourselves wondering here is simply whether or not this is going to end up altering any ideas that “Gotham” has planned on TV in the upcoming third season. Do they take their cues at all from the movies, or do does hearing about this put more pressure on them to raise their own game?
A great example of this could be “The Flash,” given that there is a television one and a movie one, and we think this helps the two versions almost raise their game since they don’t want to be seen as the inferior version. While “Gotham” may just be giving you proto versions of many of these characters, at the same exact time we don’t exactly think that the show necessarily wants to create a situation where their versions of Selina Kyle or Poison Ivy are less-than-stellar. They don’t really have a Harley Quinn, even if there are comparisons to be made between her and Barbara Kean.
If there’s one thing we do hope, it’s that the new movie causes them to realize that perhaps they should be more to get people excited about seeing movie versions of these characters and amp up their material. With Selina, it feels pretty clear that this is coming courtesy of the introduction to her mother. However, to date Ivy is still leaving something to be desired. Aging the character up was a controversial move, and since doing that she’s alternated between being threatening and being bumbling. We want to get a further sense of this character’s direction, since there’s not anything about her that is necessarily drumming up excitement.
Regardless of if the movie was happening, we would hope that “Gotham” would want to create exciting versions of two of the most iconic “Batman” villains out there; unfortunately, we think that both of them are still in the fledgling stages. Hopefully, having these more mature and hopefully-awesome adaptations of these characters out there, even in concept alone, will cause them to raise their game.
