‘True Detective’ season 3: Matthew McConaughey shows willingness to return

HBO logoWe shall begin this particular “True Detective” article with the semi-annual reminder that there is no guarantee that there will ever be a third season for the show. As great as season 1 was, season 2 was almost equally disappointing and by the time it was over, there was never much of a desire to get any more of the show.

However, time heals discontent and now, we do get the sense that there is passion once more out there over the thought of getting a little bit more of this franchise in some shape or form. This may have been accented further by some comments Matthew McConaughey made some time ago, saying that he would be open to playing Rust Cohle, his character from the first season, on another occasion.

This is something that the “Dallas Buyers Club” actor reiterated in an interview recently on “The Rich Eisen Show,” though he also made it clear that there was almost zero movement towards making it happen right now:

“I hear [about some of my old comments] all the time now. ‘You said you were going to do season 3. When is it coming?’ … [As of right now the] ball’s not advanced at all. I’ve talked to the creator Nic Pizzolatto who’s taking a little break from it … If that thing was written well and it came up again, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second … I’m open to it for sure.”

If you’re a diehard fan of the series, take some solace in that, and also take some solace in the notion that nobody seems to be rushing into making more. If it ever comes about at some point down the road, this is your evidence that it wouldn’t just be patched together in order to generate big ratings. McConaughey doesn’t need that, and neither does HBO now that they’ve got “Westworld” and some other things on the air.
