‘The Exorcist’ season 2: What are the renewal hopes for Fox’s horror series?
Tonight on Fox, “The Exorcist” is going to be closing its doors — at least for the time being. Will it be forever? That’s what we are still waiting to find out.
The one thing we can say is that tonight’s episode is not necessarily the series finale, and that there is still some hope for a season 2 of the show. As for how much hope, most of that is going to be up to whatever Fox chooses to decide.
For the time being, we will say that the ratings for the first season have aspects that are good and bad. Let’s start by getting the bad part out of the way now: The show only averaged a 0.7 rating for the entire season, and that’s not a number that inspires a whole lot of confidence, especially for a first-year show. Given that many rookie shows lose a little bit of steam before the sophomore season airs, that is something that does need to be considered.
However, at the same time the show has showcased a certain element of consistency in that since the premiere, it has averaged between a 0.6 and a 0.7 rating for every episode, and it has never drifted lower than that. Therefore, the people who decided to make the commitment in episode 2 are still around now, which means that there could be a faithful viewership that bucks the trend of sophomore season declines, especially if they encourage more people to watch a show that they may not even be altogether aware of at the moment.
Also, consider that the ratings for Fox across the board are not that great this year. “The Exorcist” is actually averaging better ratings for the season than “Scream Queens,” and is only a tenth behind the average for “Pitch” in the demo. It’s even less than that when you compare it to “Rosewood” so far. These are all shows that, at least so far, had the luxury of airing on nights of the week with a larger total audience.
Ultimately, we feel like “The Exorcist” is firmly a toss-up. We’d like to see more of it, but there may be several different avenues Fox looks at (including DVR viewing and streaming) before they make a decision. For the time being, one simple way to show support is to merely vote in the poll below.
