‘Designated Survivor’ episode 11 preview: When will the ‘who was shot?’ mystery be solved?
To say that this season of “Designated Survivor” ended with a cliffhanger would be a very gross understatement: We’d say more than anything that it ended with someone sliding off the edge of a volcano. This was fiery, explosive, and of course crazy. It’s basically interwoven into the fabric of modern ABC, where so many of their shows live and die on these huge swings and these much-hyped “OMG” moments that are often bigger then they need to be.
As much as we bemoan this level of network-speak the majority of the time, we do feel like this show executed an awesome cliffhanger with the shooting tonight. If you’re going to do something like this, you have to go THIS big and bold and without apology. You have to blow everyone away, since otherwise there is really not much of a point to it all and you may as well end things off with President Kirkman chilling in the Oval Office watching reruns of “The West Wing.”
The one thing that we will bemoan is the split-season format, which leaves us without new episodes until it’s return on Wednesday, March 8. There was a time that we were all for this as a means to keep fewer repeats on the air, but now shows like “This Is Us” are showing a different way in airing seasons that play out entirely until late February / early March with fewer breaks (fewer breaks make for happier viewers). If you start production a tad earlier, this could be possible, and it keeps your audience from eroding during the season. Also, that gives you room for potentially an eight-episode experiment in the new year where you can try to launch a new show in hopes of finding that next big hit.
When the show does return, at least have the comfort of knowing that it is probably not going to waste a whole lot of time before getting to the good stuff.
